Announcement overview

The Jerzy Haber Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Krakow announces a competition for the position of Assistant (postdoc) in the group Theoretical and Experimental Biocatalysis.

The competition is open to persons who meet the conditions set out in the Act on the Polish Academy of Sciences of 30 April 2010 (Journal of Laws 2020, item 1796, as amended), Article 89, Section 4.

Responsibilities

The candidate will participate in research within the OPUS 28 research project, conducted in the Theoretical and Experimental Biocatalysis group in close collaboration with the group of Prof. Artur Gora of the Silesian University of Technology, on hydrolytic enzymes capable of cleaving ester, amide and urethane bonds in systhetic polymers. According to the project brief: "The experimental part will be dedicated to: ... v) design of a set of proteins for deep polyurethane degradation, vi) design of chimeric proteins with high affinity and catalytic efficiency toward heterogeneous surface."
In particular, the Assistant's responsibilities will include:
- protein production by overexpression in E. coli,
- protein purification by affinity chromatography and molecular sieving methods,
- fast enzyme kinetics studies by stopped-flow or rapid freeze quench methods,
- crystallization of studied proteins,
- preparation of scientific publications.

Education level

The candidate(s) should have a doctoral degree in chemistry, biology or related disciplines.

Skills

- Ph.D. degree in chemistry, biology or related field;
- Knowledge of molecular biology methods;
- Knowledge of protein purification methods;
- Knowledge of methods for determining enzymatic activity;
- Knowledge of methods for studying enzyme kinetics;
- ability to crystallize proteins;
- knowledge of the English language;
- ability to work independently as a scientist;
- the candidate(s) must meet the requirements specified in the NCN regulations governing employment for the post-doc position in the OPUS competition (edition 28)*.

* The post-doc contract is reserved for a person who obtained a doctoral degree in the year of employment in the project or in the 12 years prior to January 1 of the year of employment in the project. This period may be extended by a period of long-term (more than 90 days) documented sick leave or rehabilitation leave due to incapacity. In addition, the period may be extended by the number of months of leave for the care and upbringing of children granted under the rules of the Labor Code, and in the case of women - by 18 months for each child born or adopted, if such a way of indicating breaks in scientific careers is more favorable.
In addition, during the period of drawing a salary, a person employed as a post-doc may not draw other remuneration from funds granted as direct costs from research projects financed under NCN competitions, and will not draw remuneration from another employer under an employment contract, including an employer based outside the territory of Poland.
